Are You Really What You Eat?

It’s no news eating a healthy diet is a major contributor to overall good health. You might have heard the phrase You Are What You Eat, but in truth, life is rarely that simple. Because everyone is different, many aspects can influence what a healthy diet looks like for you personally, as well as how your body takes on board and uses the nutrients contained in your food.

This article will explore some of the reasons nutrient requirements differ, and how you can discover whether your body is receiving optimal nutrition.

You Have Unique Nutrient Requirements

It goes without saying your body needs the correct nutrients to function properly. Nutrient shortages and imbalances produce a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, difficulties in concentrating, digestive problems, and blood sugar issues. Or the result might be premature ageing, mood disturbances, immune issues, or poor recovery from exercise. In fact, the list goes on and on.

Problems with digestion and absorption, impaired utilisation of nutrients, or increased requirements may affect nutrient needs. On the other hand, there may simply be a lack of nutrients in the diet.

Furthermore, lifestyle, genes, and health status all impact the types and amounts of nutrients optimal for personal health. In other words, even if you and I eat a completely identical diet, your personal makeup may mean for various reasons you need relatively more of certain nutrients than me. Therefore, after a while on that diet you may become low in these nutrients while I don’t.

How to Test Nutrient Status

It’s not easy to immediately know which nutrients you might be lacking. A skilled practitioner can infer, by taking a comprehensive health history, the nutrients required to correct imbalances in your body’s systems. However, functional testing can add valuable information to this picture. Functional tests peek inside your body to see what is happening at a cellular level and reveal how your body is metabolising your food. Results can help fine-tune your diet to ensure it provides the nutrients, in the correct quantities, to help your body function to its best ability.

We’re excited to offer a new bundle of tests – the Nutrients Testing Package. It’s designed to give you a 360-degree insight into what your body needs for optimal energy, health, and resilience.

Let’s have a look at these tests now.

Nutrient Core Genetic Test

This test examines your personal DNA profile. Inherited genetic predispositions influence how your body metabolises nutrients, in turn affecting your personal nutrient requirements.

For example, a specific gene variant impacts how easily vitamin B12 is shunted into cells where it’s needed. If that process is inefficient, you’ll need to ensure plenty of B12 is available. Other gene variations affect how efficiently vitamin D is transported around the body. If your transportation system isn’t working well, you may benefit from extra vitamin D.

Genetic individualities can also predispose you to nutrient sensitivities, for example to gluten and lactose, as well as influence your appetite. They can affect your sensitivity to toxins, how efficiently your body controls blood glucose levels, and even your response to caffeine.

The test examines nutrients including B vitamins, and vitamins D and C, your body’s resilience to inflammation, and its metabolism of fats and sugars. It will shed light on appetite control and your circadian rhythm. Once you know your genetic picture you can take into account any enhanced need for specific nutrients. All this information simply requires a cheek swab.

Health MOT (Nutreval)

This test looks at both blood and urine to provide a picture of your current nutritional needs. It detects biomarkers, substances revealing key aspects of body functioning. By looking at these biomarkers, the test will evaluate your current status in relation to a wide range of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and fatty acids. Furthermore, results can reveal issues in digestive functioning contributing to low nutrient status, how efficiently your cells are producing energy and repairing DNA, and any toxin exposure affecting cellular function. By highlighting issues with body systems, the test reveals where nutritional support will be most beneficial.

Support for Your Health with Functional Testing

Taken together, these tests can inform personalised nutrition and supplement recommendations, identifying where your body may need additional support.

Whether you want to get to the bottom of troublesome symptoms, you’re keen to reduce the likelihood of chronic health issues in the future, or you simply want to optimise your nutritional status, these tests are for you. Results are presented in an easy-to-follow format, colour-coded for ease of interpretation, and include actionable nutrition recommendations.
