Iodine deficiency generally occurs when intake is less than 20 mcg/day over a prolonged period of time. Mild or moderate iodine deficiency may cause an enlarged thyroid gland (goitre) with no other symptoms. If iodine deficiency is severe enough to prevent adequate production of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism), this causes many symptoms due to a decreased metabolic rate:

The Urinary Iodine Test is for people who want to check their iodine level. It’s particularly suitable for those who:

• Have had irregular results from thyroid tests such as TSH, T3 and T4 and want to investigate whether an iodine imbalance is affecting their thyroid function.
• Suffer with fibrocystic breast disease or have a history of breast or cervical cancer.

Do not drink more than 3.5L of liquids during the collection period.

Avoid the following foods and medications for 5 days prior to and during the collection period:

• Seaweed/kelp
• Fish
• Sea vegetables
• Other foods containing iodide/iodine
• Iodine supplements (other than the prescribed loading dose)
• Non-essential medications

Do not discontinue prescription medications without consulting with your healthcare provider.

Women should not collect urine while menstruating.

   Every test comes with clear instructions on how to collect your samples.
3. Return Your Test
   Once you’ve collected your sample, simply return it to the lab using the prepaid shipping label included in your kit. Your samples need to be sent guaranteed next day delivery or via courier please do not send samples on a Friday.
4. Analysis and Result Interpretation
   Once processed, your results will be sent to us. We can then provide you with this information directly.
