The Metabolic Approach to Cancer – How Can it Help?

ESTIMATED READING TIME 5 MINUTES

We’re celebrating the first-ever International Metabolic Health Day on October 10th, supporting research and awareness into metabolic health. Read on to discover what is meant by metabolic health and why it holds the key to understanding and managing chronic diseases, including cancer.

What is Metabolic Health?

Metabolic health, according to pioneering naturopathic doctor and integrative cancer specialist Dr. Nasha Winters, occurs when your body’s processes are in balance. Metabolism is a term used for the chemical processes occurring in your body that allow life to be maintained.

Your body is naturally designed to obtain nutrients from foods and use them to benefit you. Its ability to do this has a major impact on how healthy you are. An optimally-functioning metabolism is crucial for balanced blood sugar and good immune function. These both contribute to managing chronic inflammation, and so prevent diseases from developing.

Issues with metabolic health are connected to a raft of chronic diseases, often known as lifestyle diseases. These include Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, poor liver health, kidney disease, obesity, Alzheimer’s and cancer. All these diseases are on the rise. Poor metabolic health is also connected with mental health issues, autism and ADHD.

The world is experiencing an explosion of poor metabolic health. In fact, it was estimated that, as of 2018, fewer than one in fourteen American adults had optimum metabolic health 1. Being a healthy weight is no guarantee of metabolic health, either. Other researchers found less than a third of normal-weight adults in their sample were metabolically healthy 2. In other words, you can’t always detect what’s going on inside the body by looking at a person from the outside.

Metabolic Health and Cancer

According to Cancer Research UK, over 18 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed globally every year.

To understand why cancer occurs we need to ask what has gone wrong to allow it to develop in the first place. Stresses on the body are wide-ranging in the modern world, including environmental toxins, nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances, poor gut health, blood sugar imbalances, oxidative stress and immune system issues. These are all connected with poor metabolic health. Root causes are completely individual, with no two people having exactly the same reasons why they develop a chronic disease.

The reason for this is every person is a unique individual, with different genetics, life history, lifestyle, stress levels and nutrition. This means treatment for a disease can never be a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Conventional therapy has failed to provide a magic bullet to cure cancer. Changes in metabolic health stack up little by little over time, creating an environment where cancer can thrive. Changing that environment – often called the terrain – by improving metabolic health is the key.

You Can Improve Your Metabolic Health

The great news is, you have control over your metabolic health. This is because it’s heavily influenced by dietary and lifestyle factors like nutrition, stress levels, sleep, movement and good gut health. So, you have the power to make informed decisions about your health if you are equipped with tools to improve your metabolic health. By optimising metabolic health, many chronic diseases can be prevented before they have developed, or managed if they are already present.

As Dr. Nasha says ‘nutrition, movement and harmony combine to create a masterclass of vitality and wellbeing, forming the foundation upon which our resilience is built’.
