Natural Support Through Your IVF Journey

IVF Treatment

If you are one of the many couples who have been unsuccessfully trying for over two years to start a family, you may be considering IVF.

IVF is often thought of as a last resort in the quest to conceive. It can be an emotionally draining process, not to mention prohibitively expensive. Plus, only around a third of IVF procedures involving women under 35 result in a successful pregnancy. Sadly, this figure drops to just 5% for women aged 43-44.

In this blog, you’ll learn how to naturally support your body through IVF to maximise your chances of pregnancy.

IVF Explained

IVF stands for in-vitro fertilisation. Eggs are extracted from the mother’s or donor’s ovaries and fertilised outside her body in a special laboratory. It’s usually only available on the NHS to women under the age of 43. It is also offered to same-sex couples when artificial insemination has been continually unsuccessful.

The process involves firstly taking hormones to normalise your menstrual cycle. After this, drugs known as ovarian stimulation drugs are administered to encourage your ovaries to release more eggs, in other words, to rev them up. This is followed by a hormone injection to stimulate the release of eggs. Your eggs will then be retrieved and fertilised, and replaced into your uterus. You’ll then be given progesterone to help prepare your womb for a healthy pregnancy.

The goal is for the developing embryo to implant successfully and reduce the likelihood of it being rejected by your body. Commonly, couples need more than one IVF cycle before a successful pregnancy occurs.

Ensuring your body is in optimal health before you start IVF can give the process more chance of success.

  • Nutrients Needed to Make Babies

Crucial nutrients include zinc for mobile sperm and healthy ovaries; co-enzyme Q10 to help generate cellular energy; and folic acid and vitamin B12 to help cell division, essential during early pregnancy. Meanwhile, vitamin D is crucial to enable the embryo to implant into the endometrium. Vitamin E can support the health of the endometrial lining, so it acts as a good host for the embryo.

One study demonstrated women following a Mediterranean diet had more success through IVF 1. A Mediterranean diet can boost the father’s sperm count, too 2. This type of eating means consuming abundant, colourful fruit and vegetables, oily fish, seeds, nuts, beans and legumes. At the same time, you’ll naturally be eating less sugar, refined oils and processed foods, which have been linked with lower fertility levels.

Coffee drinkers might want to reduce their intake, as coffee intake has been linked with reductions in IVF success rates. It’s also sensible to avoid alcohol.

  • Gut Health

A woman’s immune system naturally changes when she is pregnant to reduce the likelihood of her body rejecting the developing foetus. Because the majority of your immune system is located in the gut, good gut health is essential for a properly functioning immune system.

A healthy gut microbiome contributes to reduced inflammation, better nutrient absorption, and balanced hormones, all crucial for a healthy pregnancy.

  • Stress

Problems conceiving can be an enormous source of stress for both partners. However, nature in her wisdom reduces the likelihood of conception during stressful events. It’s her insurance policy against babies being born into a hostile environment. Meditation, deep breathing and gentle exercises like yoga or Tai Chi are all great stress relievers.

Lack of sleep is a significant stressor to the body. Studies have shown getting between seven and eight hours of sleep is linked to better success through IVF 3.

  • Toxins

Infertility can be associated with an overload of toxins in the body, with many chemicals in common use known to disrupt hormone balance. So, it’s a good idea to clean up your environment. Switch to natural cosmetics and personal care products, household cleaners and laundry detergents. Eat organic whenever possible and avoid storing food in plastic packaging.
