Hormone Imbalance and Fatigue

Do you constantly feel tired, unable to drag yourself out of bed and as if your energy has left the building? Could you do with a nap right this minute? If this sounds familiar, it’s a sign something is unbalanced in your body. Have you considered it might be connected with your hormones?

It may surprise you to learn hormone imbalances are one of the most common reasons for fatigue. In this blog, you’ll discover how your hormones could be making you tired.

What are Hormones?

Hormones are chemical messengers telling the various parts of your body how to act. They literally affect every single cell in your body, and without them, your cells wouldn’t know what to do. For example, hormones control how quickly your cells burn energy, how you react to stress, and they co-ordinate reproduction.

Let’s have a look at some hormones that can affect your energy levels

Thyroid Hormones – Giving You Oomph

Your thyroid gland sits in your neck, and it’s often referred to as the body’s accelerator pedal. It controls the rate at which your body’s cells burn fuel and produce energy.

Your thyroid releases a hormone called thyroxine. This attaches to a special receptor outside the cell and tells it how fast to produce energy. So, if you sometimes feel like you need revving up, it might be your thyroid at fault.

The thyroid can be affected by a number of issues. It might simply not be able to produce enough thyroxine. But it might not be as straightforward as that. Thyroxine exists in either active (T3) – in other words, it can affect cells – and inactive (T4, or storage) forms. If your body isn’t able to swap the two versions around when it needs to, then thyroxine won’t be able to communicate with your cells as it should. Or the thyroxine might have morphed into a mirror image of itself. This means it jams up the works, a bit like a nail getting stuck in the cog of a machine.

The answer might seem to be to give thyroxine in the form of a pill. This often has a beneficial effect, at least for a while. But what usually happens is the body senses the increased levels of thyroxine in the blood from the pill. It then simply stops making so much of its own, as it doesn’t see the need. Therefore, you might find your dose needs to be increased over time. Plus, thyroxine in pill form is inactive T4. So, if your body is not particularly good at converting T4 to T3, you won’t feel the benefit.

Blood Sugar Balance and Energy

The second major hormone influencing energy is insulin. This hormone controls your blood sugar level by allowing the glucose in your blood, obtained from food, to enter your cells. If insulin isn’t working, then the sugar will stay in your blood and won’t reach your cells. They’ll then lack energy, and you’ll feel tired.

Too much sugar in your blood isn’t a good idea as this can damage the insides of your blood vessels as well as causing inflammation.

The problem with insulin may be with supply because your pancreas isn’t producing enough. Or, on the other hand, your cells might have lost their sensitivity to the hormone. So, although it’s knocking on their door asking for sugar to be let in, your cells aren’t bothering to answer. This is what happens when insulin resistance develops, the precursor to Type 2 diabetes.

Stress Hormones and Fatigue

If you have a lot of ongoing stress in your life, your adrenal glands will constantly pump out the stress hormone, cortisol. This hormone helps your body react to a stressful situation, so you can successfully escape. Over time, your adrenal glands may become fatigued, and less cortisol is produced. This can be a common cause of fatigue.

These are only three of your hormones that if out of balance can lead to tiredness. They’re not the only ones – testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone, and melatonin imbalances can make you tired, too.

Functional Medicine Support for Balanced Hormones and Improved Energy

As you can see, hormone imbalances causing tiredness are often not simply caused by insufficient hormones being produced. So, the answer isn’t necessarily to give more hormones. This also means many people are missing being diagnosed by conventional medical tests – in fact, researchers suggest more than one in ten people in the UK may have an undiagnosed thyroid issue 1.

Functional medicine believes the first step towards putting any imbalance right is to find out exactly what’s going wrong, rather than simply guessing. Your practitioner will use functional tests to discover what’s happening inside your body and what may be amiss with your hormones. Following this, natural strategies will be recommended to rebalance your hormones.
