Boost Your Fertility in Your 40s and Beyond

ESTIMATED READING TIME 4 MINUTES

fertility for 40 plus - pregant woman over 40

Difficulties conceiving can be a source of immense heartbreak and frustration. If you are in your 40s or older these feelings are often compounded by a sense of panic that time is running out. Although inevitably your changing hormonal picture means your fertility naturally declines as you age, there are many natural approaches you can take to maximise your chances of conception.

So, please don’t worry you’ve left it too late to have a baby – help is at hand. Read on to discover more.

How do Hormones Change as Women Age?

Your hormones naturally fluctuate in a monthly pattern, but as you reach your 40s and beyond, they also naturally alter. Often you won’t ovulate every month. This means no progesterone is released as usual in the second half of your cycle. You might not know you haven’t ovulated, but you may notice your period is heavier or lighter than usual, or it arrives at a different time. These are all signs your hormones are out of kilter.

If you don’t ovulate every month, you’ll end up with low progesterone relative to oestrogen, a situation known as oestrogen dominance. If this is the case, any egg which is released and implanted into your uterus will have a hard time developing and the pregnancy may fail.

So, managing unbalanced hormones is key to improving your fertility. Many women in the UK are now leaving it later in life to have children, and the good news is, the fertility rate for the over-40s is now higher than for women in their 20s.

Knowing how diet and lifestyle can harmonise your hormones will help to increase your chances of conception.

Natural Methods to Improve Fertility

A variety of foods rich in Coenzyme Q10 good for fertility
  • Maximise your nutrient status. Even slight deficiencies in essential nutrients mean your reproductive system can’t work as effectively as it’s designed to. Nutrients particularly important for optimum fertility include vitamin D, E, B12, folate, zinc and iron.
  • Coenzyme Q10 isn’t considered to be an essential nutrient as your body makes it for you. However, you produce less as you get older. Coenzyme Q10 has been found to reduce the rate at which your eggs age 1. It’s crucial for energy production in your cells, too, so as the years pass you may not produce enough to sustain a pregnancy. Your practitioner can advise you if a supplement of coenzyme Q10 would be useful for you, as this nutrient isn’t widespread in food.
  • Seed cycling is the technique of eating certain seeds at different phases of your menstrual cycle. It uses the natural hormone-balancing ingredients in these seeds to help regulate your cycle. Find out more here.
  • Manage your stress. Ongoing stress steals progesterone. Think about it – if you’re in a constantly stressed condition, your body won’t prioritise making a baby. You may be so habituated to feeling stressed it doesn’t even register. Although it’s hard to avoid feeling stressed by countless failed attempts to conceive, you can steps to manage your response to this challenge. Use stress management tools like deep breathing, meditation, mindfulness and yoga. B vitamins, vitamin C and magnesium are crucial nutrients involved in your stress response.
  • Get enough sleep. Insufficient quality sleep will have a knock-on effect on your hormone balance. You may have fallen into the habit over the years of existing on too little sleep. Set an intention to go to bed and wake up at a similar time each day, even at weekends. Ditch caffeine and screen time in the evening to help you sleep.
  • Reduce toxin exposure. Toxins encountered in everyday living can seriously impact your hormone balance. These endocrine disruptors are found in plastics, even those routinely used in the food industry. Avoid storing food in plastic containers, and never heat food in plastic – use glass instead. The same advice goes for water bottles. Switch to natural personal care, laundry and cleaning products – they also contain chemicals known to impact hormone levels. Pesticides affect hormone balance, so eat organic whenever you can.
  • Nurture your thyroid. Many women have an underlying undiagnosed thyroid imbalance. Your therapist can advise whether this applies to you.
  • Don’t forget about Dad! All the above tips apply to baby’s father, too. He especially needs zinc, selenium, vitamin E and coenzyme Q10 to make healthy sperm.

Natural Support for Fertility

Many women have healthy babies into their 40s and older, so it’s not too late to make positive dietary and lifestyle changes to maximise your fertility. But even if you’re still in your 20s or early 30s and want to wait a while before trying to conceive, neither is it too early to lay the foundations for a healthy pregnancy.

Your therapist will support you by assessing your diet, nutrient status and lifestyle to naturally increase your chances of conception. Functional testing can reveal your personal hormonal picture and any nutrient deficiencies.
